DRAW EVERYTHING!
As a Storyboard Artist, you have to draw EVERYTHING!
We don’t have the luxury of saying that we ‘can’t draw hands’ or ‘don’t understand perspective’… It’s also what keeps the job exciting as we’re asked to draw so many weird and wonderful things!
My advice to any aspiring Storyboard Artists and Illustrators would be: practice drawing anything and everything. Learn how to draw all kinds of different objects and surfaces.
You also need to create your own ‘visual shorthand’. Drawing storyboards doesn’t involve rendering photo-realistic textures or spending hours just shading flesh tones. The purpose of storyboards is to capture a specific ‘moment’ or ‘feeling’. I think they should have an element of spontaneity or movement, whilst also being instantly recognisable.
It's not easy! But totally achievable once you’ve mastered your visual shorthand 🤘
Here’s a list of some of the weirdest and wonderful-est that I’ve had the privilege to draw:
(images below)*
- A car that’s cleaning windows on a skyscraper
- Jamie Redknapp avoiding a dart
- A footprint that looks like a mountainous landscape
- A robot
- Dogs *being intimate*
- A terrified hamster
- A granny wearing a Metallica T Shirt with a beach ball in her pants
- Hey Duggee
- A Babybell undressing
- A person in a cuddly toy costume flying a small drone
*these are all from real scripts
Which is your favourite? What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever had to draw?
