LEARNING IS HARD
Learning is hard!
I wanted to post a video of my creative process but I’ve got nothing to show. It turns out that making videos is tricky and learning a new skill is really difficult! The irony is that as a storyboard artist, I understand all of the film-making principles but I don’t yet possess the skills of a DOP, Director, Cameraman, Editor or any of the other crew members.
It’s helped me realise that what I do is very niche but also very necessary. In the same way that I shouldn’t attempt to be a director, a cameraman shouldn’t necessarily attempt to be storyboard artist (there are of course exceptions- apologies to all the super-talented polymaths out there!).
Having said that, I really believe it’s important to keep growing and learning so that we don’t plateau. It’d be easy for me to give up on the videos/reels but I know it’s going to take time and patience to nurture this new set of skills. We now live in a world where we expect things instantly. Spending a serious amount of time on anything new can feel unsettling and alien. I’d much rather be churning out lovely storyboards and illustrations but that won’t help me develop as much in the long term. So… I’m heading back into the editing suite for another shot. Short-term pain for long-term gain. I hope to be able to show some of my videos real soon.
What new skills are you attempting or struggling with? If you need a hand with anything Art related, let me know. I’d be more than happy to help out. In the near future, I might even have a video or two to demonstrate...
