MENTAL HEALTH
There’s never a bad time to talk about mental health.
Last week I was honoured to produce some storyboards for a short film exploring mental health struggles. A topic close to my heart and a good reminder to look after ourselves.
It can be tough being freelance. You can experience incredible highs (new client, exciting project!) and crushing lows (quiet times, ‘I’ll never get work again’ imposter syndrome…). It’s important to be aware of this so you can try to calibrate these emotions and keep on an even keel.
Here are some techniques I use whenever I’m struggling:
✅Reach out to someone. Even if it’s just for a chat. Being connected is so important.
✅Do some exercise. Go for a walk or run and spend some time outdoors (away from a screen).
✅Be proactive. Produce some new work or chase new leads. Being passive and waiting can feel rubbish but being active gives me a sense of purpose and achievement.
✅Shut out the noise. Negativity can be a virus. It’s useful to remember that you’re in control of your own path, even if you’re surrounded by negative news, people and situations.
✅Treat yo’self! (*from ‘Parks and Recreation’) Do something fun or have some nice food. I think it’s important to try and remember the positives and to enjoy yourself if possible, even when you feel low.
✅Be kind. Helping others can also give you a lift and sense of fulfilment and positivity.
What other tips do people have for coping with mental health struggles? If any other freelancers are struggling, feel free to get in touch. I’d love to chat 😊
Here are some storyboards from the film. I look forward to sharing the final cut when it’s been completed.
